vv. 3–6: The information about the speaker given in these lines is quite substantial: he was called Laurentius (Lorenzo), belonged to a noble Roman family, the de Calvis (dei Calvi?) and had a distinguished ecclesiastic career which included the offices of protonotary apostolic, canon of Saint Peter and "scriptor apostolicus". Nonetheless we have been unable to identify the man.
