1 Monte sub hoc lapidum tegitur Ballista sepultus: Unter diesem Berg aus Steinen liegt Ballista gut bedeckt begraben:
Ballista
Some sources explain that Ballista was a teacher of Virgil who later became a bandit. Most probably he is a fictitious person whose name is used to make a joke: Ballista (‘Catapult’) does not shoot any stones but perishes in a hail of stones himself. Stoning, by the way, was not an established form of punishment in ancient Italy.
